Webroot Report on the online banking malware attack
The Webroot security company has announced that they’ve found more than 200,000 brand new online malware attacks on banks in the period of July to September. The security company has stated that this increase in malware infection is the highest in the last 11 years. In the previous quarter from April-June the total number of malware infections had been 146,000. However, there are a few online users who are susceptible to this high increase in malware infections. As per the security company this infection is not equally distributed across the globe. US customers who use online banking are more vulnerable to the effects of the threat of malware affecting online banking while those in the United States are what these malware creators are targeting. Therefore, the report shows that authors of malware for online banking as well as other cybercriminals have narrowed their focus to US bank customers who are based in the US.
Malware software is targeted at Americans
The most vulnerable users are those who are of US origin. Americans being susceptible to 23 percent of new malware infected banks as well as Brazilian users are at risk of 16 percent infection by malware while Japanese have a chance of being affected by 12 percent. Other countries that are found to be at risk comprise Mexico, India, Australia, Vietnam, France, Germany and Taiwan as per the Webroot report.
